This is a 3D printed item, using a fine ABS like resin and is a complete body (with separate detail parts) to create an O scale Darjeeling and Himalayan Railway narrow gauge 'A' Class locomotive (7mm / foot) running on 16.5mm track.
This is a near scale replica of the popular 'A' Class steam locomotive, built by Sharp Stewart & company in 1881, running on the Darjeeling Himalayan Narrow Gauge railway. This variant includes modifications that make it a 1885 model, with the early extended coal bunker and saddle / collar tank.
It has been designed to run on the Dapol OO Gauge B4 chassis (which means that it doesn't have the outside frames, but it runs very very smoothly). It was specially commissioned by a modeller to add to his O16.5 gauge railway. It even retains the glowing firebox effect.
Photos 1 is of an example of the set of parts as you will receive them, comprising of:
- main body
- roof
- replacement cylinders
- water tanks
- coupling bars (with NEM pockets)
- cab controls
- clack valves and steam valves
- whistle
- smokebox door locking assembly
- reversing lever
- replacement motion bracket
- front mounted lamp
- M2 machine screws for fixing the chassis to the body and attaching the coupling bars
The model requires an OO Gauge Dapol B4 chassis (not supplied) and brass rod / tube to complete (0.8mm inside diameter tube, 1.0mm rod, 0.8mm rod, 0.5mm rod) as well as a few modelling skills. You probably already have the brass rod in your modelling stash, but this is available as an option, if required.
Photos 2, 3 and 4 show the body assembled (with no clean up) and with the Dapol B4 chassis fitted into the body. Photo 5 shows the replacement cylinders attached and the required piston extensions ready to fit. The only modifications required to the chassis are to remove the couplings, pull out the two rear sand boxes, drill out the front and rear fixing holes to 2mm to accept the new fixing bolts (M2 machine screws are supplied with the body kit) and replace the cylinders and motion bracket.
These are genuine photos taken with a full frame 35mm SLR and not digital representations.
Photo 6 is used by kind permission of PLS who has chronicled the build of this kit in the NGRM-online forum. It has been built using the parts in this kit, with additions, beyond those mentioned being name / maker plates, paint and hook couplings.
To complete the body kit you will need to remove two formers from the base of the boiler with a razor saw, smooth out any small printing imperfections and then fix the various fittings, lamp and roof.
The holes for brass rod will need a quick clean out with a suitable drill bit and brass rod added.
The body includes swivelling coupling bars (to deal with the large loco overhangs) with NEM pockets to accept a variety of couplings. M2 machine screws are provided for attaching them.
Bear in mind the size of these items when looking at the detail in the photos. The loco body is 118mm long, 46mm wide and 60mm high and scaled to 7mm to the foot. A few minor compromises were made with the model to accommodate the Dapol B4 chassis, but it is all pretty close.
